Villa Rumah Senja

Ubud villa Rumah Senja (The House of Twilight) is a spacious three-bedroom staffed villa across two floors with a large terrace, a self contained studio apartment, a private pool and jungle views. The property sits within convenient walking distance of some of Ubud’s finest dining venues and is part of Rumah Hujan Estate. This lovely Bali home has been carefully designed to provide a sense of shelter and privacy from the hustle and bustle of the town.

The kitchen, living and dining room share a lofty open space that opens to a terrace and private pool measuring 10 x 5 m. On the second floor there are two bedrooms with adjacent bathrooms, a small sofa area with a TV. The 45 sqm terrace connects with a bridge to the third (studio) bedroom, Sebun Kedis (Birds nest).

Entering Rumah Senja from the courtyard, slipping off your shoes as you alight the few wooden steps to the door, it takes a moment for the space to fully reveal itself. Once inside, you find yourself in a Joglo (traditional Javanese wooden house) up among the treetops.

A central atrium tops the ground floor, rising 9m high to the traditional woven ceiling, hung with three oversize Balinese lamps. Floor to ceiling windows surround you, acting as a frame for the panoramic view. Despite its size, it feels intimate among all this nature hidden by the lush jungle at its doorstep.

Dark wood grounds the glass house to its natural environment - seen in the low marble-topped table at the heart of the sitting room, surrounded by soft pillowy chairs; the long sideboard stacked with paperback books, games and music speakers (giving you multiple options on how to spend your evenings).

A beautiful garden and pool view is guaranteed from every seat at the long dining table, which seats 10 - an asset which makes time spent preparing meals in the L- shaped wooden kitchen equally enjoyable. Local teas and spices, and ceramics in which to serve them, are housed in the walk-in pantry.

As you climb the outdoor wooden staircase to the first floor, the balcony gives way to views across to the sacred Campuhan Hill. Your senses are engaged differently up here - a new view across the valley, new bird sounds each morning. Take a moment to soak it all in on the outdoor daybed, a perfect vantage point.

The upper floor is crafted from lighter, reclaimed wood - if you look closely you can see its intricacies and faded carvings. A mezzanine lounge connects the two bedrooms, creating a space to contemplate your surroundings (indoors and out); an additional rest space to sit in each morning, or wind down before sleep.

A bridge connects to the third bedroom, Sebun Kedis, a one-bedroom studio with private kitchen and terrace. Translating to “bird’s nest” in Balinese, Sebun Kedis is a tropical hideaway nestled above the treetops. A loft space imagined in Joglo reclaimed timber, it blends traditional Indonesian architecture with a Western way of living.

The wide open main room is bookended by rest spaces - at one end, curl up into a soft double bed afforded privacy by its white linen mosquito net, at the other, sink into a deep 3-sided sofa lounge area. The central space is given over to living - settle in to the bench seating around the marble topped table for long lunches (a small writing desk sits off to one side for more work related matters), overlook blue skies as you prep dinner in the wood crafted kitchen, or climb into the hammock, slung from overhead beams, for a perfectly situated sundowner.

The reclaimed wood is at its most beautiful in the paneling of the separate bathroom. Sink deep into the bath perfumed with local flower petals, looking out on the tops of palms through the hand painted windows.

Glass doors unfold onto the balcony, where you have the most expansive, uninterrupted views on the estate. Sat at your two person table, it feels like the most intimate and special spot of all.

Guest access

Villa Rumah Senja is part of Rumah Hujan Estate. The estate shares common access, parking, security, and gardens where fresh coconuts, papayas, passion fruit grow. The estate also shares a 200sq.m. floor surface bamboo pavilion, designed and built by Ibuku (creators of the Green School) and Studio Jencquel.

Please enjoy the bamboo pavilion - play some football or basketball with your kids or use the weights and bench that are available. We are happy to help you with any preparations or bring some cold coconut water as refreshment.

Private Chef

Our private chef is available for Rumah Senja, for lunch and dinner (on most days with prior notice), at the cost of the groceries + 20%. Please leave some notice of what you wish to eat, since we always try to source local and conscious products - our meals are prepared with fresh ingredients following the seasons and rhythm of the local markets. We do not offer a la carte. Please ask for our menu for choices and inspiration.

Ubud center is 2.5 km away, which is 40 min walk or 10 min drive from Rumah Senja.
